Apartment Moving Tips for an Easier Moving Day
Moving into or out of an apartment has its own set of details. Lifts need to be booked, trucks need somewhere to park and buildings often have rules about when and how you can move. None of it is difficult, but it does need to be sorted before the crew arrives.
These apartment moving tips cover what to check with your building, what to measure and what to tell your removalist so the day runs to plan.
Check the building rules early
Most apartment buildings have rules about moving, set by the body corporate or building management. Contact the building manager, strata manager or your property manager as soon as you have a date, and ask:
- Are there set days or hours when moves are allowed?
- Does the lift need to be booked?
- Is there a loading dock or designated loading area?
- Are removalists required to provide any documents, such as proof of insurance?
- Are there rules about protecting common areas?
Do this for both buildings if you’re moving from one apartment to another. The rules can be quite different.
Book the lift, and ask about lift protection
If the building has a lift, book it for the full time you expect the move to take, with a little extra time on either side. Many buildings provide protective padding for lift walls. Ask whether it will be installed for you or needs to be arranged.
If you’re sharing a lift with residents, moving at a quieter time of day can make things easier for everyone.
Find out where the truck can park and load
Parking is often the biggest variable in an apartment move. The truck needs to be as close as possible to the entry the crew will use. Check whether:
- the building has a loading dock and whether it can fit a removal truck;
- there’s street parking close to the entrance, or whether it’s often full;
- there are time limits or loading zones nearby;
- the driveway or basement has height restrictions.
Coastal apartment moves on the Sunshine Coast can involve tighter parking, shared access and lift bookings, so these details are worth confirming well before moving day.
Measure large furniture against the lift and hallways
Lifts and corridors set the size limit for what can come in or out of an apartment. Measure the lift door, the inside of the lift car and any tight corners in the hallway. Then compare those numbers with your largest items: lounges, fridges, bed bases, wardrobes and tall bookshelves.
If something won’t fit, it may need to be dismantled or carried via the stairs. Knowing this before the day lets the crew plan for it, instead of discovering it at the lift door.
Moving into or out of a walk-up
Not every apartment has a lift. In a walk-up building, every item goes up or down the stairs, so the number of flights and the width of the stairwell both matter. Mention this clearly when requesting your quote. It affects how the crew plans the job and how long it’s likely to take.
Think about neighbours and shared spaces
Moving through shared spaces means keeping hallways clear for other residents and making sure common areas are left as you found them. Pack boxes fully and have them stacked near your door before the crew arrives. It speeds things up and keeps foyers and corridors free.
If your building has an intercom or security access, arrange a way for the crew to get in and out easily. A spare fob or someone at the door can save a lot of time.
What to tell your removalist
The more your removalist knows about the building, the better they can plan. When you request a quote, share:
- which floor you’re on at each end, and whether there’s a lift;
- your lift booking times and any moving hours set by the building;
- where the truck can park and how far it is to the entry;
- any large items that may be a tight fit.

Sort the building details first
Apartment moves tend to go well when the building side is organised in advance. Confirm the rules, book the lift, check parking and measure your largest pieces. Moving in the Caloundra area or elsewhere on the coast? The same checks apply to every building.
